Backpacks with Bane': MSCS back-to-school event features Grizzlies basketball star

"I'm really excited!" said Jamison Watkins, who is going into second grade. He attended the event with his mother, father, sister and little brother, Jefferson.

"I remember being in those shoes a long, long time ago," Bane told reporters. "I'm starting to get old now. But having people that I looked up to and thought the world of and obviously never got a chance to really meet them... It means the world to me."

Memphis Shelby County Schools hosted the school supply giveaway for kids across the community. Hundreds of cars packed the parking lot at the Memphis Sports & Events Center on Maxwell Boulevard.

“Seeing the smile on these kids’ faces is almost priceless," Bane said.

While the kids prepared to bring home the good grades, Bane hopes to bring home something else for Memphis.

"(The championship) is coming! It's coming!" he said.
